In short: the BooksOn HSN app works with TalkBack, the screen reader built into Android, and with text made up to 200% bigger. Buttons and fields have spoken names, search results and calculator answers are read out, and nothing is shown by colour alone. Two things are not fully accessible yet: the income tax PDF (use Share as text instead) and the date picker (you cannot type a date). If anything gets in your way, tell us.
What works in the app
- Spoken names: every button, tab and field says what it is. Icons that only decorate are skipped, so TalkBack does not read out clutter.
- Results are read out: when you search, TalkBack says how many codes were found. The GST amount, the income tax result and the GSTIN check result are read out as soon as they change, without moving your place on the screen.
- Switches and choices say their state: each on/off setting is one stop that says its name and whether it is on. In a pick-one group, such as the year, age or GST rate, TalkBack says which option is selected.
- Headings: screen and section titles are headings, so you can jump between them with TalkBack. In "Find your item", each new question is read out.
- Codes read clearly: HSN and SAC codes are read digit by digit ("8 4 7 1, 3 0, 1 0"), not as one big number.
- Large text: text follows your phone's font size. At 200% the screens scroll and wrap instead of cutting off words or amounts.
- Not by colour alone: rates and results are always written in words. The option you picked carries a tick and a solid border, not only a pale tint. Main text meets the usual contrast guideline in the BooksOn and Dark themes.
- Your language: the app works in English, Hindi and Tamil. Where a screen shows words in another language, such as the language names in the language picker, they are marked so TalkBack reads them with the right voice.
- Due-date alerts are ordinary Android notifications, so TalkBack reads them like any other.
- Share as text: a rate card and the income tax report can be shared as plain text, which screen readers and messaging apps handle well.
What works on this website
- The right voice: every page says whether it is in English, Hindi or Tamil, and each choice in the language menu is marked with its own language, so your screen reader can switch voice.
- Easy to move around: a "Skip to content" link, one main heading per page and clear section headings. The menus open with the keyboard and work even without JavaScript.
- Calculators and finders: every field has a label, and the result is announced by screen readers when it changes, without interrupting you.
- Zoom and small screens: you can zoom to 200% or more, and pages fall into one column on a phone. A table that is too wide scrolls inside its own box.
- Comfort: a clear outline shows where the keyboard is; dark mode follows your phone or computer; menu animations stop if you have asked your device to reduce motion.
- Pictures: screenshots of the app have text descriptions; decorative icons are hidden from screen readers.
- No obstacles: no captcha, no time limits and no cookie pop-ups. The small "Install" bar at the bottom of the screen can be closed.
What does not work well yet
- Income tax PDF: the PDF report has no accessibility tags, so a screen reader may read it in the wrong order or not at all. Use Share as text next to it: you get the same figures as plain text, which you can also send to your CA.
- Picking a date: dates, such as the invoice date or the filing date, are chosen on a calendar; typing a date is not offered yet. With TalkBack, move through the days of the calendar and double-tap to choose. Typing a date is on our list.
- Pages we do not run: the CBIC notifications the app opens and the GST portal's Search Taxpayer page (with its captcha) are government websites; we cannot change how accessible they are.
- Calculators without JavaScript: pages, menus and guides work without JavaScript, but the GST calculator, the income tax calculator and the GSTIN check need it to show a result.
- Testing is still going on: we check each app version at normal and 200% text size with Android's accessibility tools. Testing with TalkBack on real phones in all three languages is not finished, so you may find gaps.
Setting up your phone
The names differ a little between phone makers.
- TalkBack: Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack. Google's Android accessibility help explains the gestures.
- Bigger text: Settings → Display → Font size (on some phones "Font size and style"). BooksOn HSN follows it straight away.
- App language: in the app, About → Language; on Android 13 and later also in the phone's app settings.
- Colours: in the app, About → Appearance, if the colours are hard to read.
Report a problem
If something is not read out, does not fit on the screen or is hard to see, please tell us. Write to support@bookson.in with the subject "Accessibility", or send a suggestion from the app: About → Rate BooksOn HSN. It helps if you include:
- what you were trying to do, and on which screen or web page;
- your phone model, Android version and app version (shown in About);
- the settings you use, such as TalkBack or a bigger font or display size, and the app language.
We answer support emails on working days, usually within two working days, and fix what we can in the next app update. For a complaint, see Grievance Officer.
Standards we follow
On this website we aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. In the app we follow Android's accessibility guidance: spoken names, text that grows with the phone setting, enough contrast and meaning that does not depend on colour. Neither has been audited by an outside body; this page describes our own checks.
Questions
Does BooksOn HSN work with TalkBack?
Yes. Buttons, tabs and fields have spoken names, search results and calculator answers are read out when they change, switches and choices say whether they are on or selected, and screen titles are headings. Testing with TalkBack on real phones in all three languages is still going on, so please tell us at support@bookson.in if something is missed.
Can I use the app with very large text?
Yes. The app follows your phone's font size, and its screens scroll and wrap at text sizes up to 200% instead of cutting off words or amounts.
Can a screen reader read the income tax PDF?
Not well yet: the PDF has no accessibility tags. Use "Share as text" next to it to get the same figures as plain text.
How do I report an accessibility problem?
Email support@bookson.in with the subject "Accessibility". Say what you were trying to do, on which screen, your phone, Android version and app version, and the settings you use, such as TalkBack or a bigger font. We usually answer within two working days.
