What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is the international system for classifying goods, maintained by the World Customs Organization. India uses 8-digit HSN codes in the Customs Tariff, and GST rates are notified against them:

How many HSN digits on a GST invoice?
From 1 April 2021, under Notification 78/2020-Central Tax:
- Aggregate annual turnover up to ₹5 crore: at least 4 digits on B2B tax invoices (optional on B2C invoices).
- Turnover above ₹5 crore: 6 digits on all tax invoices.
The GST rate itself is decided by the notification entry the item falls under, which may be written at 2, 4, 6 or 8 digits — the BooksOn HSN app shows which entry applies and quotes it.
