How the calculator works it out

  • Once the threshold is crossed, tax is on the whole sum, except where only the part above it is taxed (purchase of goods, cash withdrawals, LRS remittances, the tour-package slabs, sale of goods). A section that says "exceeds" taxes a sum above the threshold; one that says "or more" or "less than" also taxes a sum equal to it.
  • This sum takes the total for the year over the threshold, so tax is also due on the earlier sums of the year. They are included here, assuming no tax was deducted on them.
  • Rounded to the nearest rupee, as deductors usually do. No official rule for rounding each deduction was confirmed; sections 288B and 516 round tax payable to the nearest ₹10.
  • Reduced rate: a quarter lower for sums paid or credited from 14 May 2020 to 31 March 2021 (Ministry of Finance press release, 13 May 2020). The cut did not apply where the higher rate for no PAN applied.
  • The rate or threshold for this date could not be confirmed from an official source, so no amount is given. The figure shown is only for checking.
  • For residents, no surcharge or health and education cess is added to TDS or TCS (salary, not worked out here, aside). Payments to non-residents are not worked out here.

Which date decides the TDS or TCS rate?

For TDS, the date the sum is credited to the payee's account or paid, whichever is earlier; for TCS, the date it is debited to the buyer's account or received, whichever is earlier. Some sections fix another moment, such as payment (salary, EPF, lottery winnings, cash withdrawals), before distribution (dividends), the last month's rent (194-IB) or receipt (TCS on motor vehicles and notified goods under the 1961 Act); the calculator names the date it needs. The rate and threshold in force on that date apply: a sum credited on 31 March 2026 falls under the Income-tax Act, 1961, one credited on 1 April 2026 under the Income-tax Act, 2025.

What is the TDS or TCS rate if the payee has no PAN?

For TDS, the highest of the rate in the section, the rate in force and 20%, or 5% for e-commerce sales and purchase of goods (section 206AA; from 1 April 2026 section 397(2)); under 194-IB the tax cannot exceed the last month's rent, and an EPF withdrawal before 1 April 2023 took the maximum marginal rate. For TCS, twice the rate or 5%, whichever is higher, at most 20% from 1 July 2023 (section 206CC; from 1 April 2026 section 397(2)); 1% under 206C(1H). The 2020-21 Covid cut did not apply where the rate for no PAN applied.

Do sections 206AB and 206CCA still apply?

Non-filers: from 1 July 2021 to 31 March 2025, s.206AB (TDS) and s.206CCA (TCS) set a higher rate for payees or buyers who had not filed returns: twice the rate or 5 per cent, whichever is higher. Both were omitted from 1 April 2025. It is not applied here.

Does Form 15G or 15H stop TDS?

Form 15G or 15H (from 1 April 2026, the declaration under s.393(6)) stops TDS only on the payments the law lists, such as interest, dividend, rent and provident fund. Check whether it covers this payment.
